Malizole takes the time to explain in a song issues in our daily lively hood and why help should be seeded to change society. Before a formal introduction, and at pure face value, Malizole Fololo is simply a wonderfully humble young man who loves his maker as much as he does making Afro Soul music Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover a 27-year-old Ikwezi township born-and–raised producer, songwriter and singer who’s been “hustling” his musical wares, as he puts it, since he was nine years old. “I started writing songs because I wanted to create something original and entirely my own,” Malizole says by way of introduction. Finding his musical feet in a place not necessarily known for making stars, Malizole’s Eastern Cape home, and Mthatha-fed youth, drove him to work hard to have his mark felt and his work heard. “When I was around seven or eight years of age I joined our local African Gospel Church choir,” he recalls. Soon after Malizole was asked to join the Jesus Kids, a respected and highly group of young singers. It was then that this young talent knew he wanted to become a hit maker. Not quite sure if he had what it took, Malizole’s guide was the fact that he knew he wanted to become a praise singer. “I knew I wanted perform traditional music in my vernacular,” the Xhosa born-and-raised praise prodigy explains. “My culture’s very important to me, and if there was a way I could keep my roots watered, all the better.” Besides the fact that he’s written and recorded with the likes of Theo, from Mafikizolo, gospel great Rebecca Malope, Robbie Malinga and Siphokazi – Malizole’s has his feet firmly placed on solid ground. “I remain indebted to my grandfather and grandmother,” he asserts. “I am grateful for their guidance, and to my mom and aunts too for their on-going support, love and understanding for my passion.” If you’ve been enjoying local radio lately it probably has in part a whole lot to do with “Ixesha Lokonwaba (Time to be happy)”, Malizole’s debut solo single. As the precursor to his heavyweight 14-track album, Iphupha Lam (My Dream), being released on Friday 9 May 2014, the song has spend the past two months embracing gospel and Afro music lovers all over Mzansi. He also recently shot the video for the song in Cape Town, assuring the tracks place on high rotation playlists at radio stations and with Malizole’s growing number of fans right across South Africa. …Cont. Hit House Music in Fourways, Gauteng, was the studio where Iphupha Lam’s (My Dream) 14 tracks were born and formed in. Working with no less than three of his favourite people and super heavyweight producers, Malizole spent two months with Robbie Malinga, Mojalefa Thebe and Bheki Nqoko, where each brought their magic to Malizole’s style of music making. “It was a complete bonus and privilege to work with them all,” he says. “Fate played its part. We were all in the right place, all at the right time.” Lyrically Malizole’s words cut to topical everyday South African reality. “Ixesha Lokonwaba (Time to be happy)”, talks to women and child abuse and the writers want to speak out and give people in unhappy marriages a voice they can listen to and follow. “My words are all entirely honest,” Malizole insists. “My lyrics are a refection of who I am. It’s important that I express my resolve and, once the album’s out, perform the songs as much as possible. These tracks have very powerful messages in all of them, and I’m hoping that each song offers listeners something that will add value to their lives. I’m attempting to add real meaning and value to people’s lives.
