After playing together for 27 years, Los Hermanos de los Andes confess they don’t need music or much practice to perform together. They came to Mormon Channel Studio to share a medley of “Silent Night” and “Away in a Manger,” along with a Spanish tune called “Mama Criso.” The group met in while studying engineering at Brigham Young University. Since then, they have become popular for their use of instruments that are unique to their home countries of Bolivia and Chile. The wind instruments they play belong to a family of flutes that were used in the Inca civilization. Bamboo reeds are cut to precise lengths in order to achieve specific notes. The larger the flute, the lower note. Goat skin and wood were used to create the drum, which gives each song body. Of the two string instruments they play, the smaller is called a charango. In years past, armadillo backs were used to create the charango. Today, they are usually made of wood and bring a lighthearted sound to a tune. Los Hermanos chose to play “Mama Criso” to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. “It reflects the softness, the power, the strength that a woman has,” one member explains. 🤍 Mama Criso es una de esas sesiones personales que nos debíamos hace mucho tiempo. Una canción compuesta por el gran maestro Edgar "Yayo" Joffre dedicada a su madre Doña Criso después de su fallecimiento. Un tema muy íntimo y personal que aprendimos junto a Christian Ley en las aulas del colegio de la mano de otros grandes músicos bolivianos: Savia Andina. El maestro Joffre formó parte de la primera generación de músicos bolivianos que fundaron el sonido del nuevo folklore de su país. De la mano de otros grandes como Ernesto Cavour, Julio Godoy y Gilvert Favre formó "Los Jairas", una de las primeras y principales agrupaciones de folklore boliviano a mediados de los años 60. La música de los Jairas forma parte del soundtrack de nuestra infancia junto a charangos y zampoñas. Son parte de la historia musical de nuestro continente. El sonido de un cuarteto clásico de folklore de esta época puede ser descrito como música de cámara. El virtuosismo era parte del lenguaje, explorar los instrumentos hasta niveles de maestría fue parte de esta corriente. Los grandes temas de esta época son clásicos a todo nivel y la fuerza y perfección con las que algunos grupos como Savia Andina lograron son simplemente fuera de este mundo. Es un sonido perdido en el tiempo, hoy que todo se volvió plástico, al que le guardamos muchísimo respeto. A esta versión solo le agregamos un contrabajo para lograr esa mezcla final con la sonoridad completa del espectro pero apenas es una pincelada acústica a la construcción de las texturas que brinda poder juntar una guitarra, un charango con una percusión sincopada y una zampoña clásica. Un detalle del modelo utilizado es la forma en la que el gran Rafael Arias, guitarrista de Savia Andina, logró pinceleando el puente de la canción usando armónicos para seguir a melodía. Un detalle que no podíamos dejar fuera. Finalmente, el poema final en aymara es el original cantado por el mismo Yayo Joffre y que resume el sentimiento de la canción dedicada a su madre... "Jutam jutamay waynitay, Ukham sasinay, Mama Criso" "Ven, ven jovencito, junto a mi, me decías, Mama Criso" Una joya del folklore boliviano traida de vuelta al estudio por el amor que le tenemos a la época, la música y la historia. En esta sesión nos acompaña Christian Ley en los vientos, recordando los años en los que junto a Enrique Kameko, Jorge Olazo, Eduardo Helffer y Francisco Loayza logramos formar una agrupación que fue el inicio de nuestra vida como músicos, Vientos Latinoamericanos. El sonido de un grupo de niños que sin saberlo jugaban a hacer música como si no hubiera mañana. El clásico cuarteto latinoamericano regresó al estudio después de muchos años y esperamos que siga así. Es como viajar en el tiempo, reviviendo lo mejor de una época. A mi hermano Christian, gracias. Este viaje no hibiera sido lo mismo sin haberte conocido. Gracias a todos por acompañarme en este viaje. La música nos une.
